A beautiful tourist attraction in Sambalpur is Hirakud Dam, which is the world’s largest earthen dam and Asia’s largest dam. This dam water is used for irrigation and production of hydroelectric power, and it attract many tourists for it being the largest man made artificial lake in Asia. It has been constructed on the Mahanadi river between the Gandhi Minar in North and the Nehru Minar in the South which connects these two well known hills.

In history we heard that before construction of Hirakud dam, many boats drowned in Mahanadi river by hearing the sound of a big bell. so people started offering bell here, and maa save all of the devotee from any harmful action from outside world.
