Savitri Amavasya or Sabitri Brata(Osha) is an important puja that married women in Odisha took whole day fast for their husband and wishing for their long life. This OSHA observed in the month of Jyestha Amavasya(last day of the dark fortnight), specially it falls in the month of May or June.

Rituals of Savitri Puja:

On that day every woman gets up early take their bath and wear the clean new Silk Saree or Cotton saree. They put the New Glass Bangles and apply Sindur on their forehead, various jewellery they wear and start arrangements for the worship. 

Goddess Savitri symbolised by the grinding Stone(Sila Pua). The Grinding stone is cleaned and decorated with haldi, Sindur, new saree and Gold ornaments. The women then decorate their prasad thali with 21 types of fruits Like Mangoes, Jackfruit, Litchi, watermelon, apple, orange etc, New Kumkum, Alta, Mehendi, Sindur, New Bangles of red colour, Comb, Kajal, New Saree and various things. The priest put all prasad and read the story of Savitri and Satyaban and women listen with full devotion.

The most Interesting is the new saree was given by the husband, so every woman wants to purchase costly saree for this special day, most husbands purchase the saree from online shopping and gift to them. 

All day the women only take the fruits and pray to Goddess for the Long life of their husband. They take the prasad to home and wear all new things which put in the puja thali like new saree, bangles, Alta and take the blessing of her husband then all family members. After that, she will take the prasad.



The story behind the festival:

Why is this Brata called Savitri? Savitri was the beautiful daughter of King Aswapati of Madra Desha. She selected Satyaban as her Life Partner who was living in the forest with his blind father, Dyumatsen. She Left the King's Palace and lived with her husband and in-laws in the forest. One day While cutting wood in the forest, satyaban fell down from a tree. 

Then Yamraj, the death of God appeared to take the soul of satyaban. Savitri with deeply hurt told to yamraj not to separate both. If he would take away the soul of her husband, she would also follow. Then Death of God Yamraj felt very happy by the devotion of Savitri and return the Life of husband. From that day the Savitri Puja held.
